Oil becoming the realm of despot

Petroleum Intelligence Weekly’s annual list of the world’s Top 50 oil companies confirms an alarming trend: The world’s petroleum riches are sliding further into the hands of state-owned oil companies, with Russian and Chinese companies making the biggest gains in the past year, while publicly traded Western oil companies are fighting for a shrinking pie
Exxon Mobil makes the most money, with annual revenue of $371-billion.

Does this make you feel a teeny bit sorry for the big oil companies fighting over that shrinking pie?

Barack Obama’s speeches are much admired and endlessly analysed, but, says Charlotte Higgins, one of their most interesting aspects is the enormous debt they owe to the oratory of the Romans

The MOMA’s Design and the Elastic Mind exhibit is, at least online, a stunning catalogue of creative new media.
624×24 LED reactive cloud

More than 600 LED globes from Ledon have been used in Jason Bruges Studio’s Pixel Cloud, an art installation in a London office that soars over eight floors.
A three-dimensional matrix of 624 globes, each fitted with 24 LEDs, provides a compelling lighting scenario in the atrium of law firm Allen & Overy’s office building in Bishops Square, London, which was designed by Foster and Partners.
The concept and design of the “Pixel Cloud†was developed and produced by the Jason Bruges Studio in London, together with Ledon Lighting, the Zumtobel subsidiary, which supplied the unique LED luminaires.
The LED light sculpture is suspended from the ceiling of the 10-storey atrium like an oversized chandelier, its intermittently controlled dynamic changes in color and light invoking the international reach of Allen & Overy’s world-wide network.
The Pixel Cloud extends over eight floors and 624 milky-white polycarbonate globes, each with a diameter of 120 mm, combine to form a three-dimensional network. Each of eight parallel high-gloss-polished stainless steel sections supports three arms that each carry 26 globes.

The globes are fitted with 24 LEDs and are individually controllable. Inside the globe, a dodecahedron (12-sided solid)-shaped flexible circuit board ensures each globe is uniformly illuminated. The system provides 8-bit resolution in the primary colors red, green and blue.
Every globe is individually controllable thanks to specially developed software. Real-time color and light updates perpetually change the three-dimensional LED lighting installation’s appearance.
The server generates an extremely wide variety of modes. A sky-watching camera installed on the roof is used to transfer images of passing clouds onto the Pixel Cloud. This diverse, ever-changing LED application includes films or sequences of prepared individual images and even supports inter¬active involvement of web communities. Colorful animations and playback of local weather phenomena provide constantly evolving spectacular simulations in the atrium space.
Jason Bruges Studio has adjusted the spacing of the Ledon globe matrix so that it matches the grid of the façade designed by Foster and Partners. The internal glass façade is transformed by changes in color and light. One bar at a time lights up, bringing the outdoor lighting mood indoors, from top to bottom, sharing it with those working in the offices.
